The first thing we draw on any plan is the route people already take: from the back door to the shed, from the gate to the bins, from the kitchen to the herbs.
If a path goes where people want to walk, the planting beside it survives. If it does not, a shortcut appears across the bed within a month.
Once the paths are fixed, everything else fits around them: beds at a width you can reach across, seating where the evening sun falls, and storage where the tools are needed.
